Afyonkarahisar, or Afyon, as it is known among the people, is the center of the province with the same name. It has made a name in Türkiye and abroad in the marble and food sector. The name of the city, which was Afyon, was changed to Afyonkarahisar in 2005.

The old name of the settlement was Karahisar-ı Sâhib. The name Karahisar comes from the color of the dark volcanic rocks rising in the middle of the city and the fortress above it. The name Sahib comes from the title of Sahib Ata Fahreddin Ali, who lived in the last periods of the Anatolian Seljuks and came here during the Mongol invasion. The name Afyon, which is used today, is based on poppy cultivation, which has been done in the region since ancient times.

The history of the city dates back to 3000 BC. The settlement, which was under the rule of the Hattians in the first periods of 2000 BC, passed under the control of the Hittites in the middle of the 2nd millennium BC. When the Hittite state collapsed, the settlement came under the rule of the Phrygians around 1000 BC. It ended with the defeat in the Battle of Issos with Alexandros. Since 30 years BC, the region in which it is located has been under the rule of the Roman Empire. During the Romans, the settlement was named "Akroenos". With the division of the Roman Empire in 395 AD, the settlement remained in the territory of the Byzantine Empire and the settlement was named "Akronion".

Towards the end of the 12th century, the settlement passed under Turkish rule. As a result of the defeat of the Anatolian Seljuk State in the Battle of Kösedağ, the region including Afyon was given to the control of the vizier Sâhib Ata Fahreddin Ali and the Sâhib Ataoğulları Principality, of which Afyonkarahisar was the capital, was established in 1275. The settlement, which joined the territory of the Germiyanoğulları Principality in 1341, passed under Ottoman rule in 1390. As a result of the 1402 Ankara War, Afyonkarahisar was again captured by the Germiyanoğulları. II. Upon Yakub Bey's will, the settlement was re-joined under Ottoman rule in 1429.

The settlement, which was first known as the sanjak center under the names of "Karahisar-ı Devle", "Karahisar" and "Karahisar-ı Sahib" during the Ottoman period, started to be referred to as "Afyonkarahisar" in documents in 1684. "The settlement was captured by Kavalalı İbrahim Pasha forces in 1833, but it was again under Ottoman rule in the same year.
